Investing In Yourself

One of the less quantifiable benefits of my work is when a client comes away with a deeper understanding of a topic and discovers solutions they hadn't considered. As human beings, we learn from one another within contexts of practice. It's why musical groups and sports teams, under the guidance of teachers and coaches, are considered to be opportunities for personal growth.

Sometimes nonprofit professionals think they don't need coaching or don't want to pay for something that isn't directly tied to a return on investment. The pressure is real in the field of fund development. We become so focused on building the organization's capacity that we forget that we, as skilled professionals, are at least as valuable an asset as a new database or website.

See if this rings a bell for you. Until fairly recently, I've been parsimonious in giving myself resources for personal growth for two reasons:

  1. I think I should be able to figure it out on my own

  2. I used to believe I'm not worth the investment, a sentiment often disguised as "it's too expensive"

Stubborn and shortsighted! Yes, I could figure it out the hard way and use my time recreating the wheel. What is the alternative?

It turns out that learning is more rapid, comprehensive, and enjoyable with a teacher. My time and energy have value. A coach honors those resources.

Ask me how I know. This year, I started studying voice with a longtime friend who is a highly-educated and seasoned musician. She gives me access to a deep library of knowledge that addresses my need for better technique to supplement 40 years of paying attention to excellent choir directors. With her help, I am enjoying singing a rigorous season with the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorus. The working musicians in the group have had years of training with experienced teachers. Many still have a coach. Changing from a fixed to a growth mindset has given me confidence to sing at this level. Getting help isn't cheating and it isn't reserved for those who are already at a high level of skill. It is a path to growth and excellence for anyone.

In this age of always-available virtual resources, working with a real person who knows what you are facing is still valuable.

You are worth it. Let me know how I can help.
